Letter: Military Exhibit Presented Michael’s Service Respectfully

The LiCalzi family visited the Military History Exhibit at the library with the principal intent of viewing the materials and memorabilia concerning our son 1st Lt. Michael L. LiCalzi, USMC who died in Iraq in 2006 serving our nation.

As you know, Michael spent most of his life in Garden City, attended GC schools until he entered Chaminade HS, and went on to the US Naval Academy, whereupon at graduation he elected to be commissioned an officer in the US Marine Corps. In Michael’s words, this was his only “honorable option given the alternatives.”
We were all very pleased with the respectful manner in which Michael’s service was presented. Likewise, we found the total exhibit very informative and interesting; and certainly worthy of the status of a permanent exhibit at either the library or village hall. Everyone agreed that the quality of the narrative information, maps and photographs was extremely high.
We also would like to thank all of those individuals and organizations that played a key role in the planning, design and execution of the exhibit, especially that portion dedicated to Michael. These include Cyril Smith, William and Thomas Slattery, the American Legion and the Friends of the Garden City Library.
Thank you again and best wishes to all of our friends in Garden City.

Greg and Carol LiCalzi
